World Agriculture Forum - Innovating for Sustainable Future

Message from the Co-Chair of the World Agriculture Forum

As Co-Chair of the World Agriculture Forum, I am proud to contribute to advancing equity, resilience, and innovation in agriculture and food systems—especially in climate-vulnerable regions where women and communities are often on the frontlines of change. I served as the 6th President of the Republic of Mauritius and am a Professor of Biodiversity. My career has spanned scientific research, public service, and international leadership. I made history as the first female President of Mauritius, where I championed science, education, and sustainable development at the highest level.

Before my presidency, I was Managing Director of CIDP Research & Innovation, a globally respected centre focused on the development of botanical and pharmaceutical products. I have also chaired the International Council for Scientific Union and served as an Independent Director on the Board of Barclays Bank of Mauritius Ltd., bringing my scientific and strategic insights into the financial sector.

Throughout my journey, I’ve always believed in combining academic rigour with policy advocacy. My contributions have been recognised internationally, including being named to Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women (2016) and the Top 100 Women in Africa (2017 and 2019). I remain deeply passionate about using science as a force for good—particularly to support sustainable development, climate resilience, and the empowerment of women and youth.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim

Co-Chair, World Agriculture Forum
