The 6th President of the Republic of Mauritius and a distinguished Professor of Biodiversity, Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim’s career spans scientific research, public service, and international leadership. She made history as the first female President of Mauritius, where she championed science, education, and sustainable development at the highest level. Before her presidency, she served as the Managing Director of CIDP Research & Innovation, a globally respected centre focused on the development of botanical and pharmaceutical products. A leading voice in global science diplomacy, Dr. Gurib-Fakim has chaired the International Council for Scientific Union and brought her scientific and strategic insights to the financial sector as an Independent Director on the Board of Barclays Bank of Mauritius Ltd. Throughout her career, she has combined academic rigour with policy advocacy, and her contributions have earned her a long list of international accolades, including the recognition in Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women (2016), and inclusion in the Top 100 Women in Africa (2017 and 2019). As a WAF Board Member, Dr. Gurib-Fakim brings not only her scientific acumen but also a global outlook and deep commitment to using knowledge as a tool for equity, resilience, and innovation in agriculture and food systems—especially in climate-vulnerable regions where women and communities are often at the frontlines of change.
